Deep in Zambia, vast forests are home to a rich supply of wild honey. For nearly a decade, Chinese entrepreneurs have put down roots here, developing honey-processing operations and teaching local communities beekeeping skills that can provide a more secure source of income. Working side by side, Chinese and Zambian partners have become colleagues, mentors and friends, learning from one another and becoming part of each other’s daily lives. As expanding China-Africa trade links open access to overseas markets, Zambian honey is travelling further afield, creating new livelihoods and giving local communities a greater share in the opportunities that come with trade.
Globeleq, one of Africa’s leading independent power producers, has reached financial close on the Kafue Solar Project, a 40 MWac (56 MWp) solar photovoltaic power plant near Kafue Town, Lusaka Province, Zambia. The project was awarded through the GET FiT Zambia Programme and will sell its power to ZESCO under a 25-year power purchase agreement. The project is expected to provide clean energy to 38,000 households, avoiding approximately 48,000 tonnes of CO2 per year and creating around 200 employment opportunities for local Zambians.
